Brand History
Ho-ho, warm and tasty
Samlip Hopang
The idea for Hopang originated in late 1968 during a tour of the bakery market. The product was developed through more than a year of testing, carried out under strict secrecy in a location accessible to only a few. The name ‘Hopang’ comes from the sound made when blowing on a hot bun.
Introduced in October 1971 at a price of 20 KRW, four times higher than other breads sold for 5 KRW, Hopang became an instant hit as soon as it launched. From mid-October to the end of February, Hopang accounted for 15% of Samlip’s total sales, and during the peak winter months, it made up nearly half. In 1986, Hopang began to be exported not only to the U.S., the Middle East, and Canada but also to Europe. That year, Samlip set an export target of $200,000 and achieved daily sales of up to 1.7 million units.
At that time, Hopangs were 10 centimeters in diameter and weighed 90 grams, measurements which remain the same today.
